"WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT DUE PROCESS FOR ILLEGALS?!"

I was talking about politics with an acquaintance of mine; it was pretty civil, but he couldn't understand why I care so much about due process for illegal immigrants. It's a good question to ask if only to (re)discover our collective American values.

The answer is that without a trial, we can't know whether someone is actually guilty, or if the government is accusing the wrong person of a crime, or if a corrupt government is levying a baseless claim to imprison/deport that person.

Due process protects all of us from these kinds of baseless claims, and if we say we are okay with the government suspending due process for people it accuses of a crime, then it puts all of us at risk. Due process is one of our most sacred rights as Americans, and it's guaranteed to us by the Constitution.

Only a tyrant would want us to surrender our rights and empower him to deport or imprison us without trial. American patriotism cannot coexist with that sort of overt tyranny.
